Celebrity style: Thandie Newton

Thursday, March 18, 2010

How many actresses do you know have studied archaeology and anthropology in college?
How many of them can claim to be of royalty?
How many can say they named their daughter after the lead character in an alien film?
Thandie (/TAN-dee/) can.
Born to a Zimbabwean mother and English father, actress Thandie Newton grew up straddling two worlds. She claims her mother is from the reknown Shona tribe in Africa, and that she is a princess.
That makes Thandie royalty.
She has two daughters, Ripley and Nico, born of her marriage of 12 years to English producer Ol Parker.
One of her more interesting quotes from a while back was when she disclosed that she was gay as a teenager.
"We're all potentially bisexual," she told the Advocate. "It all depends on your circle, your upbringing and all kinds of things. Or maybe I'm just talking about myself. I could've easily fallen in love with a woman over a man."
That husband of hers just doesn't know how dramatically different his life almost was.

Sugarbabes new chick 'scurred' of Keisha

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

As if we needed another girl group spat, the British girlgroup, the Sugarbabes are planning big things with the upcoming release of their 7th album, "Sweet 7".
But after canning mocha-skinned Keisha Buchanan, there may be beef simmering in the group. New member 21-year-old Jade Ewen says she's scared of Keisha.
More Spice Girls than TLC or Destiny's Child, the Sugarbabes look to take off where Danity Kane left off, appealing to teens and tweens while leaving the grown-woman stuff to Kiesha Cole and Bey.
The English girls, who signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint earlier this year, hope the United States digs their music the way the U.K. has.
The Sugarbabes have 5 platinum albums. Not bad for a group that has recently seen more personnel shuffling than Destiny's Child.
This is not the first time there's been a shakeup in the Sugarbabes: In 2005, Amelle Berrabah was brought on to replace Mutya Buena.
Ewen, shown here in the pic leaving the club with Berrabah, has yet to be introduced to fans in the U.K. and may have a stronger U.S. following once the LP drops.
No word yet on any indication that Jay-Z had anything to do with the replacement of Keisha, but you know he'll star in a few songs with them. They also have NeYo and Sean Kingston on their new album.

Stuff White People Like: Lily Allen

Sunday, February 22, 2009

You might not know Lily Allen, who's exploits are akin to Amy Winehouse Lite: Drinking, eff you attitude, British bad-tail kind of stuff.
Until now, her biggest claim to fame was that she had a third nipple (now, i'm not one to rain on parades, that's quite something).
She's not particularly talented but her father is. In Britain. His name is Keith Allen. He's a basic unknown in the United States. Lily is too, except from the fact that she started a little Myspace web page and put some music on it about four years ago.
The music went bananas.
She pressed 500 limited edition 7" vinyl singles all rush-released. She also did two mixtapes, including tracks by such luminaries as Ludacris and Dizzee Rascal. Of course it wasn't long before the MSM (mainstream media) took notice and started to do cover stories, which took her from an ordinary to a somebody. She's now famous. To white people. She will, however, one day, cross over with a Dr. Dre-influenced hip-hop I'm sure.

In Britain, they're called 'Uber-Chavs'

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

Britain, long known for being ahead of the curve in most ways than one, is seeing a phenomena of young, single women born to young, single women reach adult - and basically do nothing with their lives (well, unsavory things).
This Telegraph article quotes the deputy head of Cantrell Primary and Nursery School in Bulwell, Nottingham, as saying: "We must talk about a class of uber-chavs. They are not doing anything productive and are costing taxpayers a fortune.
"It is very difficult, almost impossible, to take these people now and provide basic social and work ethic skills."
Sound familiar? I'd venture to say the U.S. has had them some "Uber-Chav" for some time now.

Amy Winehouse Threatens to Kill Herself

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

You kinda knew it would come to this, but the erratic British Beehive, Amy Winehouse, is on suicide watch, according to MTV.
A source told the Daily Star newspaper: "Her friends managed to get the knife away from her but are now holding a 24-hour suicide watch."
Poor thing, we hope she doesn't put a shank in that hair of hers, like she is known to do with that white girl.
The story continues: "She is all for this stupid Sid Vicious notion of dying young. She is not scared of it and believes it is her destiny."
