Freaknik: A Pictorial Montage

Sunday, April 18, 2010

When you hear the term "Freaknik" or "Freaknic," a certain cannotation comes to mind: Unruliness, debauchery, black people having a good 'ole time with no regard to society's woes, traffic or otherwise. Is this characterization somewhat accurate?
In the immortal words of the familiar refrain on Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" album:
"Hell Yeah!"
Let's go down memory lane, Peachtree in fact, in pictures from Freakniks past.

Adina Howard was a household name back then.

Back then, there was "No Time" for fake ones.

Let's be honest: To some people, it was a paradise. To others, it was the day the niggaz took over.

Everybody was on a Creep in the mid-1990s.

Tunes of the times: "Swing low, sweet chariot and ... Let me Ride".

They didn't mean to be so destructive, use your heart to forgive.

People were on some "goobitty gooks" stuff too.

"Still clowning with the Underground, when they come around." - 2Pac, 1993

It was all about "Electric Relaxation" - Tribe Called Quest.

Fancy cars, wild women, men in a metropolis: In 1992, you couldn't ask for a better scenario.

Freaknik does not belong in the 21st century, it died unceromoniously in 1998, choked to death by Atlanta's politicians and beaurocracy. The free-wheeling and high times of the 1990s have been killed by the fearmongering and economic waste of the 2000s. It is what it is.
In conclusion, Freaknik was not a party, it was an idea, a mind-set. Thus, it can never truly die.
It exists in the mind.

In Atlanta, Freaknik Will Never Truly Die

Thursday, March 11, 2010

You can take Freaknik out of the A, but you can't spell Freaknik without the A, as in Atlanta.
While the notorious car-and-girl fest has been dead for more than a decade, the spirit of Freaknik continues to live on in various places around Atlanta (see "strip club" in the dictionary), usually in song and pictures. But this year is different because dueling Freaknik events have sprouted up in the city, not to mention the animated special that Adult Swim aired last week, "Freaknik - The Musical," starring T-Pain and a host of other rappers.
So, why is Freaknik getting all this love all of a sudden? And what exactly was Freaknik? Physically it was a car show with babes in them. Psychologically, it was a small-city country-boy takeover of a Black Metropolis. Well, maybe it's pent-up demand. Sometimes you just miss that freak. See, Atlanta, since the mayor that got the party started was sent to jail and back, has straightened its tie, so to speak, and given its soul to business interests. In doing so, there's been a groundswell of support for things to go back the way they were, for the good times of yesteryear to re-emerge.
Freaknik, call it want you want, symbolized Atlanta at its good-timey peak: The city was fresh from a tryst with the Olympics, millionaires and black people were moving in in droves, and most importantly, the City Too Busy to Hate had jobs. Tons of them.
But things have changed.
The city is no longer as hospitable to visitors as it once was. Unemployment is above the national average.
Jobs are scarce, good times are rare, and well, people miss that Freak.

Interview With ATL BombChell: She Hearts Music

Sunday, March 22, 2009

As I looong promised, I was going to start interviewing bloggers, and first up is the glamorous ATL BombChell of BombChell.Blogspot.com. The conversation turns musical at the drop of a hat with 'Chell, which lets you know, Sista "got style, grace, and plus a different technique."
Check the Q and A.

What would be your fave pigout food, and why?

Cheese. Because I love cheese so much that it's sad, and though i might look young and healthy my doctor warned me about my cholesterol levels. I love cheese dip, hot pockets, cheese sandwiches, you get the point =) I'm trying to cut back.

If there was one singer that made your theme music who'd it be?

Skye!!! definitely. I'm insanely in love with it her song "Love Show" I like her voice, how she brings out various emotions, and I've checked out some of her other stuff, so she seems versatile. If not I'm going with Linkin Park!

What's in your Ipod right this second?
Akon's "The Rain" (I just found my ipod so it's like a year off)

Give me some lyrics that are in the back of your head at all times.

It changes constantly depending on what i watch. like Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and Knaan's "ABC".

What do you like most about the ATL? Least?

I love the fact that if you really look, you can find various subcultures here. Like an African club that's open till 5am; an alternative pizza joint; or a poetry cafe.

Least: our weather is crazy, she has constant mood swings, hot today, cold tomorrow, rain the next lol

Skills are important in the big city. When was the last time you had a physical fight? And did you win?

I was very young in boarding school. I thought I did, but apparently I didn’t.

Smoke or drink?

I drink a little socially.

Fave chillout spot in the ATL?
Atlantic Station!!!!!! You can shop, eat, watch a movie, bars, bowling alley, and 2 hours free parking!!

Rate the quality of dudes you're meeting in the ATL in your opinion. ON a scale of 1 to 10, which 10 being the bomb.
7.5

I've met a lot of nice guys, various races, with good heads on their shoulder. There are a lot of beautiful people here (both in and out), and I'm happy I got to meet them.

What three words describe your blog, and how long have you been bloggin'?

Fun, visual, creative. I've been blogging since summer 2008.

And, finally, where would you like to be in 5 years?
Lots of people tend to have some business or occupational aspiration, but I would like to be blissfully happy with the people I love.

Spoken like a true gem. And, there you have it. Our first and hopefully not our last PopWife interview. Check out ATLBombchell at the custom-made link below. Want PopWife to interview you? Hit the email.

Female Alcoholics, Introducing the Wine Rack

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Want to look hot and get your buzz on? The cleverly and appropriately named Wine Rack is the bra for you. Now you can get "to up from the flo up" and nobody even know. Only problem is, your rack will get smaller and smaller with each sip - but you will increasingly not care. This would be absolute genius for Piedmont Park on a spring weekend day!
