Amerie's album flops: 'Don't know what happened'

Friday, December 11, 2009

Radio totally ignored her. Industry shows like the Grammys and VMAs didn't even share an ounce of air-time on her. So it's not quite a surprise that Amerie's new album "Love in War" sold a disappointing 12,500 copies in its first week. Then again, who's disappointed? Amerie says “It’s a very weird time. I didn’t worry about it ’cause I felt like it’s not about the first week,” in an interview with Rap-Up.com .
To her detriment, she's stayed out of the news, with no arrests, no boyfriend beat-ups or crotch shots. And it seems to have taken her career off the rails.
The singer seems to think the record label totally bungled the release of her album, although she's not really saying that. Quite. Per se.
“I knew when the album came out, it wasn’t coming out with a big hit ’cause we just went to radio with the ‘Pretty Brown’ (featuring Trey Songz and Lloyd Banks) record two weeks before the album came out, so we already knew it was going to be one of those over time things vs. a first week thing, which is cool.”
But what about the album's first single not even being ready for iTunes? “That was weird. I don’t know what happened with that."
Sorry, Amerie, we know what had happened was ...

BlackBlasian and Proud

Monday, October 19, 2009

First of all, there could be a million different ethnicities and sub-nithicies (okay, it's a made-up word) of people these days, but one of the more prominent is the Blasian (or Afro-Asian).
The Blasian - Black + Asian - has been around since, well, centuries, quite naturally. But here in America, the term usually refers to a mix between African-Americans and someone from one of the Pacific nations (such as Philippines, Japan, China etc.).
Some Blasians have been making some serious headlines lately (That guy who smiles all the time after putting for birdie? You know, the one that's usually wearing a red shirt and visor and is usually smiling when they hand him the three-foot-long trophy? Yeah, Blasian.)
Some say the most popular "black" male model of our times is, well, Blasian.
Now, we all know race is a touchy subject, but ethnicity is not as divisive (right?): Anybody and everybody can claim a mixture: The whitest person in the world can claim, with some validity, an African ancestor. What we see now though is a pride associated with it that hasn't manifested itself before.
Some people feel though that one shouldn't emphasize the mixture, just the dominant traits i.e. if you have one drop of blackness in your blood (especially if its clearly seen in your complexion) then you're black.
I don't know; Is Kimora Lee Simmons Black, Blasian or what? She's whatever she wants to be.
I guess we all are.

Will Amerie's 'Love and War' be either?

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Your girl Amerie is back in the limelight with the release of her upcoming album. She recently released the cover art, which is on some hmmmm-kay type ish.
Amerie, who is a relatively new Def Jam signee, is benefiting from moderate marketing and promotion this time out, and it figures, because "In Love and War" is definitely a do-or-die album.
But can she sing?
Actually, scratch that. Who sings nowadays?
Can she accurately convey the pain and emotion that a title like "In Love and War" brings to mind?
Will "In Love and War" be either?
Her last LP, 2007's "Because I Love It," wasn't even released in the United States (where they do that at?)
This time with "In Love and War," she is hoping for stateside success at least. In her absence she's seen newcomers like Keri Hilson become chart monsters with the help of features from people like Kanye West and Lil Wayne.
Speaking of the Young Money rapper, he appears on one of "In Love and War's" first singles, "Heard Em All," which could be a blessing or curse this time, depending on the public's response to an obvious oversaturation with Weezy.
Amerie's music, known for heavy percussion and flighty vocals, will need to come correct this time if it stands a chance.
If not, we'll be seeing ya ... "So You Think You Can DanceSing."
