Can girl groups survive today?

Monday, February 15, 2010

Barbie Gaga

Ever since the estrogen juggernaut known as the Supremes have record execs and managers tried to create that most elusive of musical brands: The successful women's group.
Sure, we've seen megawatt-acts -- TLC, Destiny's Child, Spice Girls -- but we've also seen some trainwrecks -- Envogue, Blaque, anyone? -- and even more prevalently, some trains that have never left the station -- Cheetah Girls, Brownstone, Total, Jade, SWV, etc.
Don't get me wrong: There have been many men's groups -- Dru Hill, B2K anyone? -- that have fallen hard in olden days and recent times, fueled by their unquenchable thirst for drugs, sex, and nowadays, even more drugs.
But it's the girl groups that have showed the most promise.
TLC was the No. 1 selling female group when Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was killed. Spice Girls were rewriting the musical history books in the UK when they disbanded; Destiny's Child was also the No. 1 selling female group when they disbanded.
Lighting in a bottle?
These women had cases of it.
but what's so hard about creating a group of superhuman female songstresses, you say?
Well, evidently, egos rarely stay in check. The Supremes were derailed by the percieved lioness persona of Mary Wilson (or was it Diana Ross?). Squabbles in groups since then have led record execs to "craft" groups now, rather than have them come to record offices already assembled and humming in unison.

The results, have been disastrous. Danity Kane, formed before our eyes on reality TV, was force-fit together by Diddy and his cronies in an unnatural act that even major love from the fans couldn't stop (The same happened to Diddy's Day 26).
Is it time to stop trying to grow supergroups and let them happen?

Farrah Franklin: Destiny Fullfilled?

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Farrah Franklin used to be in Destiny's Child, for those of you who don't recognize the face. Franklin, a teen model, was used as an extra in Destiny Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills" video and was personally tapped by Mathew Knowles (along with Michelle Williams) to join the group. She lasted less than year, hearing about her firing from MTV, of all sources.
Since the departure, Franklin has been in search of stardom but it has proved to be elusive.
Earlier this year, she formed the Internet girl group Pheenx with two other girls only to find out that one of them was doing porn on the side. Franklin also took a turn on the reality TV show "Millionaire MatchMaker". That didn't go so right either.
Now Franklin is reportedly trying to record an album and shop it to music labels in 2010.
Destiny fulfilled?

Kelly Rowland 'Not Ready' to Find Real Dad

Monday, July 13, 2009

Former Destiny's Chillen Kelly Rowland says she's not ready to find her biological father, whom she hasn't seen since she was 7.
Apparently she's got too much going on.
The revelation sheds more light on the impact Matthew Knowles, whom she dumped four months ago as manager, had in her life.
She told Britain's Heat Radio: "I feel like I'm not really ready for that yet, I've enough going on in my life to really open that up. Maybe later on in about 16 or 17 months. I told myself I'd work for 16 long months and then I'd take a vacation or a break, but now is not that time for me."
Kelly and mom Doris Rowland Garrison were forced to leave when a Daddy would come home "drunk and aggressive."
"I don't know where he is but I hope he's not dead. That would break my heart. I remember my dad being drunk and aggressive towards my mom but not me. It took courage for her to get away.
"I don't know if he knows who I am or what I've done. He must be hiding under a rock if he doesn't."
WOW!

Destiny's A Beach: It's Ya Girl Kell

Kelly Rowland took some time out recently to snap a few pics of herself on Miami's South Beach.

Beyonce's "Fierce" Goes Platinum ... How?

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

After an initial burst, Beyonce's latest album "I Am ... Sasha Fierce," has slowly reached the platinum status, months after its release. The album, which we said sounded like a Rihanna LP yielded two strong singles out the gate, "If I Was a Boy," and "Single Ladies [Put a Ring on it]".
Usher's 2008 album "Here I Stand" has been certified Platinum according to the RIAA as well, but they all trail Kanye West's quick platinum certification of "808s & Heartbreak" which came out last month.

Kelly Rowland Denies Home is in Foreclosure

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

Former Destiny's (step)Child Kelly Rowland says media reports that her Miami crib is in foreclosure proceedings are far from real.
Rowland, who bought a home in London last year, is said to be cutting loose the property because she's simply not there. Unlike many celebrities, Rowland has publicly cut back on her expenses during the economic downtown, including cutting Matthew Knowles loose as her manager.
Rowland has been trying to sell the house for a minute now, and has slashed half-a-million dollars off the $1.9 million house.
If she is having "foclo" difficulties, she won't be the only one.

Solange Has the Hottest Legs in the Game. Period

Saturday, October 25, 2008

You can have your hit records, your posters of big-booty celebrities, Solange Knowles has quietly carved out her own little niche in the entertainment world: Killer legs. The "Hadley St." singer is reportedly not dejected that her album didn't fly through the roof - and had prepared herself for such a reception from the public by stating that she did the album "for me." Obviously, she has a future as a prophetess, but there's no denying the girl's got some legs to stand on if the music thing doesn't work out.

Scientific Evidence That Says Angel Luv's Asset isn't Real

Monday, October 6, 2008

Few things are as different and unique to each individual as human anatomy: Your hands are your hands, your ears, as similar as they are to someone else's, are uniquely yours. Video model Angela Lola Luv's buttocks is scientifically freakish: It doesn't look right. It's bulbous without the support of a fleshy back. To help you with the visual, we've contrasted her back with former Destiny Chillen Kelly Rowland. Now, notice how Kelly's is all proportional within God's plan? Now, look at Angel's ... the Devil's work indeed. Now, black women are known to have some ample waist flair but Angel's is crazy. Is it real, or a gift? We're willing to bet that the gluteus has been bioengineered in some way. Now, in what way we can't say. But consider a few facts about the organ she's so famous for.
As Wikepedia so elegantly puts it "It arises from the posterior gluteal line of the ilium, and the rough portion of bone including the crest, immediately above and behind it; from the posterior surface of the lower part of the sacrum and the side of the coccyx; from the aponeurosis of the erector spinae (lumbodorsal fascia), the sacrotuberous ligament, and the fascia covering the gluteus medius (gluteal aponeurosis).

The fibers are directed obliquely downward and lateralward;

* those forming the lower and larger portion of the muscle, together with the superficial fibers of the lower portion, end in a thick tendinous lamina, which passes across the greater trochanter, and is inserted into the iliotibial band of the fascia lata;
* the deeper fibers of the lower portion of the muscle are inserted into the gluteal tuberosity between the vastus lateralis and adductor magnus."
So, you see? It can't possibly be hers.
