Despite sales, Ciara's music is built to last

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

You might not be able to tell from record sales, but Ciara's catalog of music, spaced out over her three albums so far, will likely have more staying power than, say, Rihanna's and maybe even Beyonce's.
While Beyonce and artists like Monica and Keri Hilson have capitalized on the sound of Now, Ciara's sound is futuristic, robotic even. Her music is sonically closer to Aaliyah's than any other artist. CiCi isn't the only female artist out there with lackluster sales though.
While music will continue to get more computerized, and less organic, her sound prove more durable over the long haul. Now, that won't do her any good in the short term, as newcomers continue to eat up ever-shrinking market share around her, but people will one day appreciate her for what she was. In other words, those Goodies may last forever.

Before Nicki Minaj, there was Vita

Friday, December 18, 2009

Few new hip-hop heads today have heard of LaVita Raynor, but the rapper better known as Vita, from Murder Inc., used to kill mics and was considered the heiress apparent to the lady rap throne.
The Bermuda beauty had a sibling, Kima, in the Bad Boy group Total.
Like so many of the other artists associated with Irv Gotti this decade (remember Charlie Baltimore?), Vita has fallen off the map.
Vita's long-awaited album, which was due to be released in 2001, has still languished nearly a decade in what's left of Murder Inc.'s decrepit database of beats and rhymes.
When you look at Michael Jordan's greatness, it must be viewed against the people that kept him sharp, his competition. Same is true with the female rap game; when you look at the greatest of a Lil Kim or Foxy Brown, it must be viewed through the competition of female emcees that raised the bar for the them.
Vita raised the bar.

Is Ashanti Still Hot?

Monday, October 26, 2009

Is Ashanti still hot?
Does she still have it?
Fresh off her stage debut in the multi-week run of "The Wiz," and free of her record label woes with The Inc, AND free of a longterm relationship with rapper Nelly, (well, maybe) one has to ask: What's up with Ashanti these days?

The last we saw of her she performed with Ja Rule at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, but as of now no solid music plans are in place.
People would not believe how much Ashanti had the music world on look a short 5 years ago. Everywhere you went you heard this girl. She was just that hot (Remember: "Foolish" sold more than 503,000 copies in its first week of release.)
Today, she's got fierce competition from the likes of Ms. Disturbia herself, as well as CiCi, Keri and a slew of others gunning for the throne.
So, does Ashanti have a chance?
Would you buy an album?

Everybody HatesLoves Chris' Wife

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Chris Rock's wifey Malaak Compton Rock is changing the image of the celebrity diva-spouse that countless "better halfs" have contributed to.
As head of the Angel Rock Project, check it out here, Compton-Rock promotes causes that benefit inner-city and underprivileged children through grass-roots efforts.
Most celebrities attach themselves to a cause after their kids or a relative is afflicted by some illness or disorder. Very few take it upon themselves to promote outreach with it affecting them very personally, but that is what Compton-Rock has done. And she's done it with a giving spirit and humble attitude, enlisting other celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and Ashanti, to help bring attention to the effort.
Malaack Compton Rock is a consummate Popwife.

Critics Trash Ashanti in 'The Wiz'

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

With the shows ending last week in the short-running stage production of "The Wiz," singer Ashanti has gotten mixed reviews as Dorothy.
Actually if you replaced the word mixed with horrible, you'd be more on point.
We all saw this coming, right? I bet Nelly saw it ("You need to stay right hurrrr," he prolly told her).
It's not that she doesn't have the pipes of, say, Diana Ross (Well, let's be honest, she doesn't). But homegirl is trying to act too. What Di pulled off so effortlessly is apparently harder than it looks.
The New York Daily News said of her part: "A mighty singer with a voice that soars, but a limited actress whose face registers apprehension, delight, anger, whatever,
with scarcely a shift in expression.

Bloomberg said of her performance: As Dorothy, Ashanti sings pleasingly enough, but she isn’t much of an actress, her posture often listless and her expression a frequently frozen blank.

Even the New York Times called her "lovely but lifeless".

Ouch!
Guess, being on Murder Inc. so long must have taken the life out of ole 'Shanti. Somewhere, between lying to "Deb," we think Irv Gotti is smiling:)

Ashanti Preps for the Wiz

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

You know your career is at a crossroads when the announcement that the dog, Toto, the dog, that will play alongside you, is bigger than the initial announcement last week that reported that you sign on to the project.
Sigh, Ashanti Douglas.
Last week's news that Ashanti signed on to play "The Wiz," must have been too much for Irv Gotti though. The label head of The Inc. Records (formerly Murder Inc.) says the two aren't really speaking so it's time to cut her loose.
"We don't really speak or talk and it's sad, but in another way it's like it's all good. I don't think she could win - she needs some guidance, but she's not thinking that and honestly, I'm going to drop her," .he recently said
Ashanti has already been Alice in Wonderland, thrust down a rabbit hole of uncertainty and turmoil when her label, the infamous Murder Inc., was brought to its knees by the feds in a corruption trial. After a couple years of drifting down the charts, Ashanti has taken to the theater and will star as Dorothy in a stage production of "The Wizard of Oz."
