Has Mel B's Workout Overdone It?

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Former Spice Girl Mel B did in quick fashion want countless women dreamed of doing: She shed "baby weight" pounds off her body like a stick of margarine in the sunshine. Thanks to a sick workout plan and a dogged determination to show up Eddie Murphy (the baby's father), Mel B produced stunning results in weeks: Rock-hard abs, toned thighs, etc.
But lost in the excess poundage was another item, to many people, that endeared them to Mel B: She lost her booty.
Yes, Mel B, in trying to look sleek as a statue, shed the little bit of rump she had.
Now, some people see nothing wrong with that, but there are some of us, ahem, some of us, yes, that think the ends don't justify the means.
I mean, what's wrong with a little chubbiness if you're proportioned in the right way?
Losing weight is one thing; losing a figure is something else. Sure, Mel B looks like she can win a weight-lifting competition, but you know what? A lot of men don't want you to look like you could win a weight-lifting competition. They want you to look normal, regular. But, call me old-fashioned.

Magazines Are Folding: Who's Next?

Friday, April 17, 2009

Much attention has been paid to the demise of newspapers in this recession, but what hasn't gotten much attention is the slow death of magazines.
First it was Maxim.
Last month the hip Blender Magazine bit the dust as print advertising slowed to a crawl.
Then two weeks later King Magazine, which let Melyssa Ford wax nostaglic about itself, swallowed pills as well.
It can't be long until other hip-hop magazines like The Source, etc. And if they haven't established an online audience by now, tsk, tsk.
Since last decade, hip-hop magazines have introduced audiences to countless new talent, but that will cease as print magazines dry up, and with it a cottage industry of those that advertise there.
It all doesn't bode well for the few remaining black flagship publications, namely, Jet and Ebony.
But what will be interesting is if Jet and Ebony unleash their numbers and let the public know how they are doing.
What if ... (cringe, shudder) Jet and Ebony gave up the ghost?
Let's be honest, when was the last time you went to Jet and Ebony's web site (do they have one?).
Who would carry the mantle if the worst happened? (cringe, shudder)

Wherefore Has Melyssa Ford Gone?

Sunday, October 5, 2008

The term "video vixen" didn't have much resonance until a curvaceous Toronto native stormed the hip-hop video world in the late 1990s. Her name was Melyssa Ford, discovered pouring drinks at a T.O. nightclub by a video director. She went on to do modeling work, TV and radio, and has recently been seen on the big screen (Days of Wrath). While always priding herself with not being a groupie and sexual object, her career has taken a noticeable dip lately. She has gotten cameos in movies, but no starring roles. She has gotten magazine spreads but no prominent interviews. Is Melyssa Ford winning? Other video vixens have catapulted past her, namingly Superhead andBuffie the Body, using their curves to sign business agreements, but Ford who studied forensic psychology in school, has yet to show the business acumen that the other women have. Of course, the other women are alot more naked than she is. But will Ford keep her moral standards, or dip down into the money-rich lair of semi-nudism that so many other video women have found themselves?
