Has Mel B's Workout Overdone It?

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Former Spice Girl Mel B did in quick fashion want countless women dreamed of doing: She shed "baby weight" pounds off her body like a stick of margarine in the sunshine. Thanks to a sick workout plan and a dogged determination to show up Eddie Murphy (the baby's father), Mel B produced stunning results in weeks: Rock-hard abs, toned thighs, etc.
But lost in the excess poundage was another item, to many people, that endeared them to Mel B: She lost her booty.
Yes, Mel B, in trying to look sleek as a statue, shed the little bit of rump she had.
Now, some people see nothing wrong with that, but there are some of us, ahem, some of us, yes, that think the ends don't justify the means.
I mean, what's wrong with a little chubbiness if you're proportioned in the right way?
Losing weight is one thing; losing a figure is something else. Sure, Mel B looks like she can win a weight-lifting competition, but you know what? A lot of men don't want you to look like you could win a weight-lifting competition. They want you to look normal, regular. But, call me old-fashioned.

Is TV ready for 'Spartacus'?

Friday, March 5, 2010

British TV viewers are "bloody sick" of all the blood, sweat, and well, sex, that the new TV drama "Spartacus" promises to bring to TV this fall. If the previews are any indication, the show, about the Roman-Greek empire and it's erotically Pagan ways, will push the buttons on common decency in more ways than one. Images of orgies (you know how the Greeks did it) and the bloodlust of battle dictate the show's action scenes.
If recent history is any indication, the nudity and wildness of "Spartacus" will soon make its away to the United States, just like "Big Brother" and "American Idol" has.
Censorship debate aside, should nudity be featured on regular TV, let alone primetime? What do you think?

Sugarbabes new chick 'scurred' of Keisha

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

As if we needed another girl group spat, the British girlgroup, the Sugarbabes are planning big things with the upcoming release of their 7th album, "Sweet 7".
But after canning mocha-skinned Keisha Buchanan, there may be beef simmering in the group. New member 21-year-old Jade Ewen says she's scared of Keisha.
More Spice Girls than TLC or Destiny's Child, the Sugarbabes look to take off where Danity Kane left off, appealing to teens and tweens while leaving the grown-woman stuff to Kiesha Cole and Bey.
The English girls, who signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint earlier this year, hope the United States digs their music the way the U.K. has.
The Sugarbabes have 5 platinum albums. Not bad for a group that has recently seen more personnel shuffling than Destiny's Child.
This is not the first time there's been a shakeup in the Sugarbabes: In 2005, Amelle Berrabah was brought on to replace Mutya Buena.
Ewen, shown here in the pic leaving the club with Berrabah, has yet to be introduced to fans in the U.K. and may have a stronger U.S. following once the LP drops.
No word yet on any indication that Jay-Z had anything to do with the replacement of Keisha, but you know he'll star in a few songs with them. They also have NeYo and Sean Kingston on their new album.

Amy Winehouse serious about adopting black baby - FTW

Thursday, June 18, 2009

With the celebrity craze of adopting children from poor areas and countries, seems like a most unlikely celebrity has expressed a desire to take a child under their wing.
When this story broke last I week I was skeptical and well, thought she was drunk, but now I've heard she's deadly serious.
Amy Winehouse, the British Beehive, has caused a quiet storm by saying "I want a black baby."
This is like North Korea's Kim Il-Jong saying he wants to be a janitor at the nuclear facility in Wyoming.
The embattled singer has been hanging around in St. Lucia for quite a while now as she attempts to let her body heal from the drug abuse she's done for a while.
But does Amy really need a child?
I'm not saying she wouldn't be a good mother but ... she wouldn't be a good mother. I mean, alcohol is not water.
Cocaine is not alka seltzer.
The starving children she would adopt are still meatier than her and they're starving. She's not.
Amy, stick to the music, not the Mommying.

The State of Female R&B

Friday, December 12, 2008

Ashanti isn't even in the building.
Neither is Eve.
But those that do make it inside, and into the diva room, are there precariously.
Music sales are just that bad.
Used to be a time when a viable female singer could be counted on to debut with 800,000 units sold. Some of them were one-hit wonders (Tweet?), others were riding off their producers (Amerie?), but now even that has eroded.
The top female music seller this year?
Well, you could have thought that Beyonce would own that, but it was only a short-lived victory.
Britney Spear's "Circus" album moved 505,000 units in its debut two weeks ago. Spears is the only act in Nielsen SoundScan history to have four albums debut with 500,000 or more in sales.
"I am ... Sasha Fierce" sold a respectable 482,000 in its debut three weeks ago.
Respectable, but nowhere near the numbers these artists are used to.
To be far, Bey's album sales have trumped Rihanna's, but RiRi has a bright future with longer legs in the business.
Now that the tallies are in, Alicia Keys (who in 3 months sold almost 3 million copies of her "As I Am" LP last fall) is the new standard-bearer for female R&B.
Not only has she brought artistry and live instrumentation back to music, but she has somehow managed to keep her clothes on (Cue Ciara Vibe cover right ... here.)
Rihanna is the artist with the biggest upside: Her latest album "Good Girl Gone Bad" has sold 6.2 million copies worldwide and has gone 2x Platinum in the Usa, 4x Platinum in the UK and Canada, 5x Platinum in Russia, and 6x Platinum in Ireland; helped by the deluxe LP "Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded".
One can't forget about the British Beehive, Amy Winehouse. Troubles aside her "Fade to Black" album is an instant classic, all the more spectacular by her Jewish soulfulness and apparent lack of refinement. Although her off-the-stage problems may well get the best of her, she is No. 1 when it comes to world acclaim and buzz (even if ASCAP doesn't see it that way).
Ciara is the only one that seems to be ready to accept the digital trends in music, opting for the voice coder that has made T-Pain an overnight success. Still, her album is in trouble before it can even get off the ground.
Of course, the portrait in the room would be Ms. Lauren Hill, with her prototype solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauren Hill," the holy grail of hip-hop/soul debuts. Although she could'nt duplicate her success sales-wise, Hill's album has quietly remained a best-seller among soul enthusiasts. With sales past 17 million and respect far surpassing that, she is the goal of today's R&B singer. And to think "Miseducation ..." was released 10 years ago.
But good music has staying power.

Amy Winehouse Threatens to Kill Herself

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

You kinda knew it would come to this, but the erratic British Beehive, Amy Winehouse, is on suicide watch, according to MTV.
A source told the Daily Star newspaper: "Her friends managed to get the knife away from her but are now holding a 24-hour suicide watch."
Poor thing, we hope she doesn't put a shank in that hair of hers, like she is known to do with that white girl.
The story continues: "She is all for this stupid Sid Vicious notion of dying young. She is not scared of it and believes it is her destiny."
