"Mr. and Mrs. Twitter"

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

They say that in marriage, communication is the thing. With Hollywood stars Ashton Kutcher and wifey Demi Moore-Kutcher, they've taken that saying and flipped it to millions of people.
On the social networking site, Twitter, no couple exudes the power and influence that the Kutchers have. Together they reach more almost 7 million people. Everyday.
That's the population of Switzerland or Honduras. That's the total number of people in the United States in jail or on probation. The Kutchers most literally have the "tweets heard round the world."
To put in simple, Ashton is bigger than CNN. In fact, he beat out CNN in a race to be the first person on Twitter to have 1 milion followers (He now has over 4 million).
Also, to give an example of the influence the Kutchers have, the president of the United States talks to the American people weekly via Youtube video every Saturday. In a country of more than 300 million, he averages about 1 million views  and sometimes as low as 161,000.
The Kutchers, communication-wise, may be the most powerful couple in the world.
The Kutchers are not just using their following status for superficial niceties online, they are seriously trying to help.
Ashton, 32, or "Aplusk" as he is not in Twitter world, came to recognition on "That 70s Show" before launching "Punk'd" on MTV, a celebrity prank show. Before and after, he's starred in a handful of movies, none of which pulled in the 4 million people that he has following him.
Demi Moore-Kutcher could most simply be called "Bruce Willis' ex-wife" except that it is more accurate that Bruce was "Demi Moore's" ex-husband. (You ever heard her referred to as Demi Willis? #MESSAGE).
But how did this run-of-the-mill, average Hollywood couple achieve such power?
We. Don't. Know. All we know, is if you've got a Twitter account, you follow Aplusk and mrskutcher.

what your profile pic says about you

Saturday, February 20, 2010

What makes a successful profile pic on a social networking site? You'd be surprised, according to OkCupid, which specializes in such things.
It seems for men that look away from the camera and hold a stoic, unflinching look (better not smile!) are the winners here.
As for women, the pic that flirts with the camera and shows a hint of cleavage wins out. Perhaps that's why women on Twitter who are otherwise "nobodies" can have a million followers with nothing more than a bikini pic? I don't know (it certainly would seem true for the "Myspace Model".)
If the statistics are right, then women want men who are tough-looking, meanies.
And men on the Web want, well, seductive types.
Does this describe you?

Rise of the camera-phone photographer

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Used to be when you wanted to "make a picture" (as they say down South) you had to send it in to be developed into a Space Station 13-type pod at the Kodak store or local pharmacy. That is, if you didn't have your own developing room, a pitch-black room illuminated with a scary red light and consumed with the smell of old bread and skunk pee.
But that's what it took to be a photographer, an art form that paid off big time in the form of magazines, posters and photo albums.
But with the rise of the do-it-all camera, photography is being set back a 100 years. Not only are people not interested in the "science" and "art" of photo-taking (quick, what does aperture mean?) but people are snapping photos with the phone in them.
It's become so common place that the art of photography as we know it is slowly dying. Curse you, Internet!

Celebs tweet their love of Brittany Murphy

Sunday, December 20, 2009

Some people are loved, by a lot of people, but don't know it.
Actress Brittany Murphy, who died today at age 32, was clearly one of them.
The news spread quickly around the blogosphere, with updates by the minute, then her peers, the celebrities, took over.
"This is too sad. May God give her loved ones strength," tweeted actress Laura London. Other celebrities simply announced her death. Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into the actress's death, which comes at the end to a sorrowful year when it came to celebrity deaths.
The outpouring of support from celebrities, expressed in traditional news media, and also Twitter, proved that Murphy touched some people.
Many celebs just left a short note, testifying to the bond of friendship they shared with the "8 Mile" actress.

Amber Rose: 'RIP Kanye' thread in poor taste

Sunday, October 11, 2009

Kanye West's girlfriend, Amber Rose, was none too pleased about the "RIP Kanye" topic on Twitter last week.
4Chan.org was the origin of the topic, but I don't think you wanna mess with them, Ms. Rose. Besides, everybody knows there's no love lost between Twitter and Kanye; Ye can't stand Twitter and has said he'll never get an account.
But that didn't mean his boo Rose would let it pass.
Rose tweeted that it was "disrespectful," and that "where all human."
Where all human, and where is the Webster's dictionary, while where at it.

Twitter Study of the Sexes Raises Eyebrows

Monday, June 1, 2009

In a new study by Harvard University Business School, it's been noted that there is a social phenomenom inside Twitter that analysis clearly shows: Men don't tweet each other.
Oh, they follow each other and keep tabs apparently in silence, but the resounding sound coming from dude-to-dude communication is, instead of "Tweet tweet," "CRICKETS."
Seriously, an eye-opener for me was that Twitter is mostly male-dominated, which they say is in reverse to most other social networking sites (Could it be you must tweet within 140 characters?).
Other gems from the analysis:
Men have 15% more followers than women.
an average man is almost twice more likely to follow another man than a woman.
Among Twitter users, the median number of lifetime tweets per user is one.
the top 10% of prolific Twitter users accounted for over 90% of tweets.

The Prevalence of the word 'Niggas' on Twitter. Epic Fail or Reality?

Sunday, May 24, 2009

I know people say it's a difference between the words "niggas" and the other N-word, but I can't help but feel a certain kind of way to know that people are tweeting about any and everything. The word is being typed into Twitter literally at least 10 times a minute. Constantly. Is that cool, or just a fact of life to be sighed at?

Kanye West Disses Twitter 'Farce'

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

On his blog, the Mighty One disses Twitter some good, due to a heinous imposter that has a gazillion followers. Ye says the heads of Twitter know good and well he doesn't have an account. In part, he says:
WHY WOULD I USE TWITTER??? I ONLY BLOG 5 PERCENT OF WHAT I'M UP TO IN THE FIRST PLACE. I'M ACTUALLY SLOW DELIVERING CONTENT BECAUSE I'M TOO BUSY ACTUALLY BUSY BEING CREATIVE MOST OF THE TIME AND IF I'M NOT AND I'M JUST LAYING ON A BEACH I WOULDN'T TELL THE WORLD. EVERYTHING THAT TWITTER OFFERS I NEED LESS OF.
Ouch, Kanye. And the top dogs at Twitter? They've taken the Kanye Twitter account down.
"Mosey along now. Nothing to see here."

Nick Cannon: Twitter imposter sending Tweets to Mariah

While everybody's talking about how Eminem's blatant lyrics have riled up Mr. Mariah Carey's Hubby ("Not only has his music not evolved, but also homeboy is still obsessed with my wife."), I wonder if this fis a beef that's been in the works for a while now. Nick Cannon just last week revealed that somebody had been using his name on his Twitter account and even sending Tweets to wifey.
Could it be the dastardly Eminem?

My Problem With Twitter

Friday, February 27, 2009

It's cool and all, but, I dunno, I just can't get all into it like some. It's been called "microblogging," it's been called just a simple IM platform. What is it about Twitter that's so friggin' popular? I mean, I get that I can follow and get followed by "friends." I get that Amanda Diva will holla back. I get that "What are you doing" is a fundamental question in life. But do we really need to know that I just cut a bunny bread slice into two perfect triangles? Do I really need to know that somebody in northern Ohio just pissed in the snow? Twitter just seems to me, i dunno, a stalker's paradise? I mean, it's cool, don't get me wrong. But this post kinda sums it up for me. I dunno, maybe it's just me.

Have the Terrorists Bin Twittering?

Monday, October 27, 2008

Twitter is getting all Jihad on us: According to
a report,
the government says that terrorists are already using Twitter and could use Twitter to Tweet the mess out of all of us soon. Understandably, this news has the government all atwitter with concern. The report cites Computerworld's coverage of how protesters at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul used Twitter to organize its movements and to help protesters get away from police. They say the terrorists could use the technology the same way. Could they?
