Chris Brown: Helping Haiti not about me

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Former Billboard chart-topper Chris Brown says his efforts to help Haiti are authentic and have nothing to do with him trying to rebuild his image.
Oh, and he announced a new venture where he's selling ice cubes to Eskimos.
The "I Can Transform Ya" star recently had this to say about those that question his motives. “When it’s a question of, ‘Oh, is he doing this to gain fans or get his image back?’ it hurts,” he said. “When you do something genuinely from your heart, it’s not for PR or press. If that was the case, I’d try to get Obama or somebody.”
Obama? Did you hear that Obama? Chris said he'd get you -- like pull you out of a hat, when needed (would he tell some jokes, maybe?).
Chris has a benefit concert in Richmond, Virgina, called "Virginia Stand Up," which will raise funds for Haiti.
He says he's been getting major love. “The response has been incredible,” Chris told Popeater.com. “I still live out here, so people come up to me if I’m in the store and tell me, ‘I think it’s great what you’re doing.’ It’s going to be incredible. Everybody’s happy about it.”
Chris Brown needs major image rehab. Haiti needs major rehab. I think he should do all he can to help the struggling country after January's catastrophic earthquake, but Chris, let's be real, bro: You need this.
It's okay, I'm with it, it's a good cause, just don't fake the funk, dude.
Remember, you have nothing to lose.

Who's the Most Hated Black Man in America?

Friday, March 5, 2010

Just the thought of him makes some people recoil in anger. His smile is one that calls to mind utter distrust and seething hate. He is, quite easily, the MHBMA, Most Hated Black Man in America.
Well, who?
If there was a poll, some would say Barack Hussein Obama (they won't let that 'Hussein' part go). Some would say Tiger Woods. Others would say, Al Sharpton, or how about Van Jones? Michael Steele, or even Chris Brown. But I think the two leading vote-getters would be Tiger and Obama. Why?
Well, let's just say Tiger has unearthed the dormant disgust of a nation sick of celebrity-worship and entitled athletes. Plus, he's recent cheating prowess is, well, unmatched.
Obama on the other hand, is, well, how can we say it -- remember in "New Jack City" when Nino Brown told G-Money to "sit your $5 butt down before I make change?" -- yeah, something about change.
It's deep, too. You know there are still people out there that think Obama is an immigrant? Fox News is contagious, people.

Akoo model: People 'overreacting' to sexy ad

Thursday, March 4, 2010

The model from the controversial Akoo advertisement that has enraged an otherwise lackadaisical nation says the brouhaha is much about nothing.
Dawn Montgomery, 26, a communications major from Atlanta's Oglethorpe University, says even her 4-year-old son questioned her suggestive positioning in the ad, according to Essence.com.
"I feel it's my parental duty to explain certain images to my child," Montgomery says. "At his age, my son can't necessarily comprehend the concept behind the image, but the first thing he said to me when he saw it is, 'Mommy, you're on that man's leg, and you don't know that man.' That's what came out of his mouth. As a model and a mother I put him first when I make my decisions. After I make my decisions, just like this shoot, I stand by it. When he gets older he may or may not have to defend his mother, but he will be equipped."
Let's be honest, the ad is suggestive but so is 99% of mainstream advertising these days. Akoo said they tried to be lke Calvin Klein, the granddaddy of controversial ad sleaze. What can we expect?
Akoo, for their part, has taken the billboard down, but what about the other suggestive eyesores in our major cities?

When will PETA pick the wrong one?

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has made no bones about going after people -- big and small -- in their quest to bring awareness to the suffering of animals.
Oftentimes they do it in a public, very obtruse manner, some would say even mean-spirited. Their subjects are usually stuffy old people or unkempt young people who "didn't know" the plight of those pigs, cows, elephants, beavers, etc., that make their way into the American and world marketplace.
But some people, sometimes, don't take well to criticism. Take for instance, singer Kelis, who was recently slammed by PETA for wearing furs.
When Kelis got hit, Kelis hit back.
“There is no humane way to kill anything. It’s unfortunate but it’s part of life. With that being said, I would eat pterodactyl if you found some and you told me it was meaty and delicious. I eat meat, and in fact my mouth salivates as I type the word meat!”
Football player Michael Vick, also on the end of a PETA bodyslam, privately questioned the group's motives when they allededly sent protesters to Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank's home.
PETA has been known to pelt celebrities and government officials with eggs and even throw pies.
Rapper Lil Kim, who raps about oral sex but also brandishing Lugars, has also caught shade from PETA over her furs.
Sooner or later, PETA is going to pick the wrong one, though. Sooner, rather, than later.

Nicki Minaj catching shade from female music stars

Monday, January 4, 2010

It seems the new year should be a time of refreshment, hope. But if your New York rapper Nicki Minaj, you're already the subject of some serious criticism from your peers.
Female musician and Chicago's own Kid Sister recently said, "My thing is do people take her seriously?”
While the jibe is not necessarily a diss, it does put her squarely under the microscope for even voicing her opinion in the first place.
It also puts "Barbie" in the underdog-defensive role.
The comments come after Empire-lovin' rapper LIL Mama said Nicki Minaj was "disrespectful" to black women.
Then there's the scientifically impossible gluteus of Angel Luv Lola, aka Lola Monroe, who has taken a few shots at Nicki Minaj as well ("I don't do the Barbie thing").
And all of this is even before Nicki has released an offical album.
Is the Hater juice on sale?
Or do the girls have a point?

Do You tell your girl EVERYTHING?

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

Friends are hard to find, and harder to keep, says an old proverb. But it's especially true in these days of backbiting, double crossing, and Hatorade.
Our close associates are a part of us: They know us and share common experiences that draw us closer to them. But is there a limit?
Does your BBF know all your business?
Many women will tell their friends how their man likes it in bed and his fave position and all that, oblivious to the fact that such knowledge may breed covetousness or straight jealousy.
In this day and age of the Internet, people know enough about you just by seeing a username or bio. To those people that you actually know, are you inclined to keep no secrets?
